I think the main reason for the rapid proliferation of short-form video apps is because of Tik Tok, credits to its algorithm-driven content feed which probably defeats any existing entertainment apps and not solely because of bite-sized content or time availability. The algorithm helps the creators to reach mass people who have an interest in similar contents garnering more likes and shares eventually attracting and retaining users. Over-time the algorithm develops a unique interest graph for a particular user & server content accordingly. This led to addiction among users. As Tik-Tok got banned the users need a replacement(bite-sized content apps & cost-free creator apps like Tik-Tok) and there was all the free time in the world(pandemic) which led to the growth of other apps like Josh, MX Taka Tak, etc.
